When I think of a cabin, I think of a warm cozy rustic place, usually by some body of water. Great for fishing, swimming or paddling in a canoe. I also picture it as a very old structure. But new cabins, log homes and A-frames are built every day! So how do you bring that old cabin feeling to a new vacation home? Creating a cozy cabin involves a blend of design, ambiance, and comfort.
Lots of wood is top of mind when it comes to cabins. Wood walls, floors….ceilings. But not all cabins have to be overwhelmed with wood! However you do want to incorporate natural elements like wood, stone, and natural fabrics for a rustic feel. Wood can be incorporated using exposed wooden beams, or with furniture and cabinetry. Another natural element includes stone, which can come in actual stones on a fireplace, or something like concrete or granite countertops. and stone fireplaces add warmth and authenticity. And speaking of fireplaces, a fireplace or wood stove not only provides warmth but also creates a focal point. It enhances the cozy ambiance and encourages gathering around during chilly nights.
Comfort is a big part of feeling cozy. Plush, comfortable seating with fluffy cushions or blankets invites relaxation. Consider adding a reading nook with a comfortable chair and good lighting if you have the space. In the guest bedrooms, layers the beds with soft bedding, plush pillows, and warm blankets. Use soft textures like wool rugs, faux fur throws, and knitted blankets in the living room. Great for snuggling up near the fire.
Make sure you provide off grid entertainment options like board games, books, or puzzles. They encourage relaxation and bonding time with friends or family and less screen time. Add decorative touches like hand-painted artwork of lakes or other landscapes. Draw inspiration from the landscape. around you. Handmade items add a great touch as well. Thrift stores or antique shops are a great place to find cabin decor. Any item that was once used for camping, fishing or hiking is great for decorating. You can even use them decorate each bedroom differently. For example in this blog post, I designated one of the guest rooms the “coastal bedroom”, so we used old fishing reels, boat oars and a lamp that resembled a lantern.
In the kitchen, feel free to remove the cabinet doors and have open shelving. Painted cabinets are a great way to add some color. You can also add curtains to the lower cabinets in lieu of doors to make the space a little more feminine and add to that cozy feel. And a farmhouse sink is always a winner in a cabin!
